According to a 2017 U.S. Census Bureau report:
- There are 11,667,000 single-parent families in the U.S.
- Single mothers headed 81.4% of those families.
- More than a third (35.6%) of those families were poor.
- Most of the remaining families lived paycheck to paycheck.
- Almost one-third (31.6) of these families were food insecure.
- Of all custodial single mothers,76% are employed; 53% work full-time year-round.
- Number of single moms collecting TANF (welfare) is less than 5%.
